All applicants must provide a current physical examination and certificate of immunization as a part of their application. Acceptance is determined on an individual basis. Many factors are considered including the applicant’s physical disability, medical and personal needs, and whether the child has other summer camp opportunities. Beginning February 1st, applications may be completed and submitted through our online application system. A PDF version of the application is also available for download.
Camp Burnt Gin is an overnight summer camp in Sumter County for children, teens, and young adults with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. The camp, operated by SC DPH, is a program within the Division of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN).
Camp Burnt Gin accepts campers ages 7 through 25 years of age from South Carolina who have a physical disability or chronic illness.

Camp Burnt Gin was founded in 1945 by Emily Cate, a physical therapist with the Board of Health (DHEC, now DPH). Miss Cate believed that children with orthopedic conditions needed more than medical rehabilitation.
