PMP Data Visualizations

The SC Department of Public Health’s Prescription Monitoring Program has created new, public-facing data visualizations that provide insight on controlled substance prescriptions dispensed in the state of South Carolina.

These dashboards show dispensation information by time, place and drug category for three different categories of substances – opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants – and feature key demographic data at the state and county level.

The new dashboards are updated quarterly to provide actionable data for a rolling two-year period:

SCRIPTS

How do I sign up to access the PMP database, "SCRIPTS"?

  1. To sign up to access the SCRIPTS database, go to https://southcarolina.pmpaware.net/login and click the "Create an Account" link.
  2. When registering for a SCRIPTS account, you must use an email address that is specific to you, not an office email address.
  3. Your controlled substance ID is your controlled substance registration number issued by DPH's Bureau of Drug Control.
  4. You must upload a copy of your driver's license to complete your registration.

What does a SCRIPTS report show?

The report shows information for controlled substance (CII-CIV) prescriptions a patient has had filled for the specified time period, as well as the prescriber who prescribed them and the dispenser who dispensed them.

Which drugs are included in the tracking system?

Controlled Substances Schedules II, III & IV (i.e., OxyContin®; Percocet®; Vicodin®; Klonopin®; Xanax®; and Valium®)

What types of data are in the system?

The SCRIPTS database includes all retail and outpatient hospital pharmacy dispensing of schedules II-IV controlled substances. It also includes any controlled substance dispensing activity of those substances which occurs into the state of South Carolina, i.e., mail-order pharmacies.

The database does not include methadone clinics and emergency room/departments dispensing (less than a 48-hour supply).

Where is the data stored?

The data is stored and maintained in a highly secure database. Confidentiality is of utmost importance to the PMP.

What is the turnaround time for a report?

The website is available 24/7. In most cases, the patient report is available for viewing within minutes. The report is based on the search criteria and data entered by the dispensing practitioner or pharmacy. For more information about any prescription in a SCRIPTS report or to verify a prescription, contact must be directed to the practitioner or pharmacy that dispensed it.

Is there lag-time before the data is available?

There may be up to a 24-48 hour delay from the actual dispensing date until the data is available online.

What are the uses for SCRIPTS reports?

A SCRIPTS report provides information for schedules II-IV controlled substance prescriptions a patient has had filled for the specified time period, as well as the prescriber who prescribed them and the dispenser who dispensed them. The report should be used to supplement a patient evaluation, to confirm a patient's drug history or document compliance with a therapeutic regimen.

Is it safe to say that a SCRIPTS report is complete and accurate?

SCRIPTS does not warrant any report to be accurate or complete. The report is based on the search criteria entered and the data entered by the dispensing pharmacy or practitioner. It also depends on the timely submission of data from the dispensing pharmacy or practitioner. For more information about any prescription in a SCRIPTS report or to verify a prescription, please contact the pharmacy or dispensing practitioner that dispensed it.
