Increased Processing Times and Mail-In Only Requests

All South Carolina Vital Statistics offices are experiencing longer than usual processing times due to REAL ID implementation. To get a certified copy of a birth or death that occurred in South Carolina, visit a local office or order online through authorized third-party vendors, VitalChek and GoCertificates.

To get a certified copy of a marriage or divorce that occurred in South Carolina, submit the request by mail. In-person and drop-off services for these requests are temporarily unavailable. See mail-in directions for a Marriage Certificate or Divorce Report.

All applications without the appropriate fees and identification will be returned to the applicant.

The biological parents may have already completed this step by following the steps on this page. If not, notarized written consent must obtained by one or more of the biological parents on this form. If one of the biological parents has not given consent for the release of the original birth certificate, their information will be redacted. If one or both of the biological parents are deceased, a certified death certificate may be submitted in the place of the consent.
