Hurricane Helene: Public Health Department Closures

Latest updates: Hurricane Helene

Our public health departments' hours of operation may be affected by power and staffing outages. This means that some closures may not appear on the state government office delays and closings map. The health and safety of our employees and our clients remains our highest priority. We are working to get services restored as safely and quickly as possible.

WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors Colorful Banner with an image of mom breastfeeding infant

When you're pregnant or a new mom, it helps to talk to other moms who know what you're experiencing. That's the idea behind WIC peer counselors: they are moms in your community who breastfed their babies and will give you the information and support you need.

What WIC Peer Counselors Do:

WIC peer counselors:

  • Share ways to get a good start with breastfeeding.
  • Support and encourage you throughout your breastfeeding journey.
  • Regularly follow up to see how breastfeeding is going.
  • Understand your baby’s sleep, behavior, and crying.
  • Connect moms through virtual/in-person breastfeeding support groups.
  • Provide tips for how to breastfeed comfortably, even in public.
  • Recommend ways you can stay close to your baby through breastfeeding after you return to work or school.
  • Suggest ideas for getting support from your partner, family and friends.
  • Help moms maintain their milk supply for every stage of their breastfeeding journey.
  • Refer you to a Designated Breastfeeding Expert if you need extra help.

When Peer Counselors are Available:

Peer counselors are available during clinic hours.

*You can even reach some peer counselors outside of WIC clinic hours and locations. We know breastfeeding questions can happen anytime, anywhere.
