General Infection Prevention Resources by Organization

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Infection Control:

  • The CDC’s tools and resources are designed to help health care providers implement infection control measures and prevent healthcare-associated infections. These include general resources, tools by health care setting type, tools by infection or pathogen, as well as quick observation tools. 

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA):

  • IDSA is a global community of clinicians, scientists, and public health experts working together to solve humanity’s smallest and greatest challenges, from tiny microbes to global outbreaks, by advancing the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. 

Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC):

  • APIC is the leading professional association for Infection Preventionists that focuses on advancing the science and practice of infection prevention and control. APIC provides evidence-based, scientific, and proven resources to infection preventionists, health care professionals, and patients. 

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA):

  • SHEA is a professional society that improves public health by establishing infection-prevention measures and supporting antibiotic stewardship among health care providers. SHEA's mission is ‘Safe Healthcare for All’. 

DPH Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Unit:

  • The HAI Unit within the Communicable Disease Epidemiology Section at the South Carolina Department of Public Health is dedicated to continually improving IPC practices in health care settings in South Carolina. The HAI Unit is responsible for surveillance and data analysis of healthcare-associated infections. The unit provides IPC assistance during facility-associated outbreaks or as requested and can provide limited National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) technical assistance.

Antibiotic Stewardship

DPH Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP): 

  • DPH ASP has launched several initiatives to help promote antimicrobial stewardship (AS) efforts across the state. AS is a coordinated effort to measure and improve how antimicrobial medications are prescribed by clinicians and used by patients. AS aims to preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials by reducing overuse, a key factor in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Appropriate antimicrobial prescribing and use safeguards patients from harm, limits the spread of infections and the emergence of new multidrug-resistant organisms, and decreases health care spending.

Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative of South Carolina (ASC-SC):

  • The Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative of South Carolina, or ASC-SC, is a partnership between the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, and DPH. This partnership works towards improving appropriate antimicrobial prescribing in any health care setting in the state.

National Healthcare Safety Network Components

  • The Patient Safety Component (PSC) is used to access modules that focus on process measures and events associated with medical devices, surgical procedures, antimicrobial agents used during the provision of healthcare, and multidrug-resistant organisms.
  • Applicable facility types: Acute Care Hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, Long-term Acute Care Hospitals, Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals, and Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals.

  • The Long-Term Care Facility (LTCF) Component is used to track infections and prevention process measures, systematically, to identify problems, improve care, and determine progress toward national healthcare-associated infection goals.
  • Applicable facility types: Nursing homes, skilled nursing, chronic care, and Intermediate Care Facilities for individuals with Intellectual disability (ICF/ID).

  • The Dialysis Component is used to access modules that focus on monitoring and reporting adverse events and process measures for the purpose of evaluating and directing prevention efforts among patients who receive dialysis in home and outpatient settings.
  • Applicable facility types: Outpatient Dialysis and Home Dialysis Facilities.

  • The Hemovigilance Module, within the Biovigilance Component (BV), is used for the systematic monitoring of adverse reactions, and incidents resulting in adverse reactions that are associated with recipient blood transfusions.
  • Applicable facility types: Acute Care Hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, Long-term Acute Care Hospitals, Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals, and Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals.
