Internship Spotlight: Q&A with Amiris Roberts

What skills or knowledge did you gain during your internship?  
During my internship, I gained valuable knowledge of public health practice, particularly in the prevention of STIs, HIV, and viral hepatitis. I developed skills in community outreach, health education, program planning, and professional communication. I also learned how public health programs collaborate with community organizations to improve health outcomes, reduce stigma, and increase access to prevention resources. Additionally, I strengthened my organizational skills by assisting with event planning, creating educational materials, and supporting administrative tasks. 

What aspects of the internship did you find most valuable?  
The most valuable aspect of my internship was the opportunity to engage directly with community members and see how public health initiatives are implemented outside of a classroom setting. I appreciated being able to participate in outreach events, work alongside experienced public health professionals, and observe the impact that education and prevention efforts have on the community. The mentorship I received and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects helped me better understand the importance of collaboration and community engagement in public health. 

How did interning with DPH impact your career and professional development?  
Interning with DPH strengthened my passion for public health and confirmed my desire to pursue a career focused on improving community health and advancing health equity. The experience enhanced my confidence as a professional by improving my communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. It also exposed me to the day-to-day responsibilities of public health professionals and reinforced my interest in public service. This internship has prepared me for future opportunities in public health and has given me a stronger foundation as I continue my education and pursue a career in health policy and leadership.
