DPH Fire and Life Safety is a Division of Health Facilities Oversight in Healthcare Quality. Our inspectors are certified as Fire Marshals by the South Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal, International Codes Council, and the National Fire Protection Agency. The purpose of our inspections is to ensure that licensed facilities operate in a safe manner and comply with all applicable DPH Regulations, SC Fire Codes and NFPA Standards, as well as those facilities that must also comply with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Regulations.

Renal Dialysis Facilities
A renal dialysis facility is an outpatient facility offering staff-assisted dialysis or training and support services for self-dialysis to end-stage renal disease patients. A facility may be composed of one or more fixed buildings, mobile units, or a combination.
Provider-Wide Exceptions
In the interest of establishing reasonable standards that can be met by providers and yet do not compromise the health and well-being of the patients, residents, and participants cared for in South Carolina licensed facilities, it has been determined that alternative standards will be considered as acceptable. A Provider-Wide Exception (PWE) is the tool that is used to achieve a working relationship between the facility and their regulators. The Practice of Selling and Fitting Hearing Aids
- NEW - On December 7, 2021, the State Commission for Hearing Aid Specialists met to discuss approved training activities. The Commission determined that for the licensing periods of 2021 and 2022, licensees may obtain educational units through live in-person or live online/virtual training activities. However, licensees can only obtain up to three (3) educational units for the licensing period through non-live/pre-recorded training activities (e.g., AudiologyOnline).

Hospice Licensing
No person, private or public organization, political subdivision or governmental agency may establish, conduct or maintain a hospice or hospice facility without first obtaining a license from DHEC. Applicants must submit a completed licensure application for a hospice program or hospice facility.
