Flu in Residential Facilities

Do you manage or work in a long-term care or rehabilitation facility, military base, dorm, a camp, prison or jail? Germs can spread more easily in residential settings. During South Carolina's flu season, we ask that you make a special effort to do all you can to slow the spread of flu and protect your residents and staff.

Each year, flu is a serious threat for people living in residential facilities. Seasonal flu typically kills about 36,000 Americans and hospitalizes 200,000 each year. Flu can cause mild to severe respiratory illness and other symptoms.

Background Information

South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 44-37-50 requires hospitals and Department of Social Services (DSS) adoption services to provide education to parents and caregivers of newborns about the dangers of shaking a baby and the importance of parents and caregivers learning infant CPR. The statute requires the Department of Public Health (DPH) to approve all videos to be used and to establish an educational protocol.

eCR Overview

Electronic case reporting (eCR) is a data exchange process that automatically generates and securely transmits case information between health care organizations’ electronic health records (EHR) systems and public health agencies. eCR has several advantages, including greatly reducing the burden of manual reporting and increasing the accuracy of case information reported.
