Can you share what you do and why your position is rewarding?
I’m Berry Kelly, Director of the Bureau of Community Nutrition Services and State WIC Director. Our bureau’s mission is to improve access to nutritious foods, provide breastfeeding support and promote daily physical activity through nutrition education, policy, systems and partnerships. Collaboration is key — we can’t do this important work alone. We rely on strong partnerships to achieve our goals. My position is incredibly rewarding because I get to work with the most amazing team on the planet, and I love serving the people of South Carolina.
What originally attracted you to work at DPH?
When I retired from the Army, I thought I’d never find another team I loved as much. Then I found the Department of Public Health. Its vision — healthy people living in healthy communities — resonated deeply with me, and I knew I wanted to be part of it.
What do you value most about working here, and what keeps you here?
I genuinely care about our work family and the people we serve in our agency and state. The agency excels at developing its staff, offering opportunities for growth, succession planning and workforce development. Plus, the benefits package is outstanding — 401K, health care (including vision) and flexible work hours that allow for excellent work-life balance.
Are there any selling points you’d share with applicants that you didn’t know about when you first applied?
There are positions available in all four regions across the state, providing a variety of opportunities to serve and grow!
