What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in water, soil and rocks. Fluoride helps keep our teeth strong and free from cavities. In some areas, fluoride occurs naturally in the water supply, but in most areas, fluoride needs to be added to reach a level that is beneficial.

Community Water Fluoridation

Community leaders have come to realize that fluoridation benefits their entire community- both children and adults of all ages. Fluoridated tap water protects against cavities, and studies show that it reduces tooth decay by about 25 percent over a person's lifetime. Communities routinely test the water in their systems to meet safety standards. If fluoride is added to the water, the systems are monitored to ensure the level is safe and effective for preventing cavities.

Simply by drinking fluoridated tap water, everyone in a community benefits, regardless of income or access to routine dental care. Approximately 170 million people in the United States are served by public water systems in the U.S. and benefit from fluoridation.

  • Fluoridation is safe.
  • Fluoridation of community water supplies benefits everyone.
  • Fluoridation is cost-effective because it saves money on dental treatment needs.*
